The MIS Option in Commerce (Bachelor)

What are the ADVANTAGES of taking MIS courses?
Information Technology (IT) refers to the use of computers, communications, and electronic document processing. IT is rapidly changing the way businesses operate and is the main enabling technology in adapting to a very competitive world. The full potential of IT in business has not been tapped as yet.

Knowledge of IT and its applications can be very useful to the organizations in which you will work and can give you an advantage in your career.

Making the best out of your business education at UBC:
The Faculty of Commerce and Business Administration has an MIS Option which is intended to provide students with the necessary knowledge and skills to employ IT in business. MIS Option courses can be combined with other areas such as accounting, finance, human resources or marketing. Alternatively, for students who are interested in acquiring a deeper technical knowledge, MIS Option courses can be combined with Computer Science courses. This leads to several possibilities:

1) If you are in any other Commerce option, you can select electives from the MIS option courses. This will enable you to become well-informed in the application of IT in business.

2) If you are in the MIS option, you can select electives from other Commerce options. This can prepare you for a career as a specialist in the application of information technology in one or more functional areas (e.g., financial information systems or human resources information systems). However, be aware that you may end-up with very little actual computer skills. If this is a concern, we recommend you consider taking some Computer Science courses. A list of recommended courses is attached.

3) If you are interested mainly in an information technology career, you can take most of your electives from Computer Science. A list of recommended courses is attached.

Of course, some combination of (2) and (3) is possible.

Whichever route you choose, remember, you still have a general business education.
