Research: Overview

My research program is motivated by the belief that information systems can help individuals and collectives, but in order to do so, they must be designed effectively and used effectively.

This belief drives my two research streams:

  • Research Stream 1 aims to reach a deeper understanding of how systems are used and the consequences that stem from use.
  • Research Stream 2 aims to reach a deeper understanding of principles for analyzing and designing systems so that they are more likely to meet users' requirements.

Like all researchers, my research drives from a particular worldview. The figure below highlights my two research streams in the context of my broader worldview of IS research.

The primary contributions informing my view on information systems phenomena are:

  • DeSanctis, G., and Poole, M.S. "Capturing the Complexity in Advanced Technology Use: Adaptive Structuration Theory," Organization Science (5:2), May 1994, pp 121-147.

  • Markus, M.L., and Robey, D. "Information Technology and Organizational Change: Causal Structure in Theory and Research," Management Science (34:5), May 1988, pp 583-598.

  • Orlikowski, W.J. "Using Technology and Constituting Structures: A Practice Lens for Studying Technology in Organizations," Organization Science (11:4), July-August 2000, pp 404-428.

  • Weber, R. Ontological Foundations of Information Systems, Coopers & Lybrand and Accounting Association of Australia and New Zealand, Melbourne, 1997.
