Brief Biography

An Assistant Professor in Management Information Systems at the University of British Columbia, Andrew Burton-Jones has a PhD in Information Systems from Georgia State University, and a Masters in Information Systems and Bachelor of Commerce with First Class Honors from the University of Queensland, Australia.

Motivated by the potential for information systems to help individuals and organizations, his research program is comprised of two streams:

  • The first stream studies how individuals and collectives (such as groups and organizations) use information systems. The aim is to achieve a deeper understanding of what it means to use systems effectively and to help individuals and collectives to do so.

  • The second stream examines principles used to analyze and design systems. The aim is to identify principles that help analysts and designers to create systems that meet users' requirements.

He is an active member of the research community, regularly reviewing papers for journals, conferences, and granting agencies, and serving on the editorial boards of several journals.

Prior to his academic career, Andrew was a senior consultant with PriceWaterhouseCoopers, consulting to large organizations on IT security, project management, and systems implementation.

He has taught undergraduate and graduate courses at the University of British Columbia, Georgia State University, and the University of Queensland. His teaching specialties include systems analysis and design, database systems, IT auditing, and internal controls.
